The key lesson is to be vigilant and discerning about whom we allow into our inner circle. Outsiders can only cause harm if we let them in, as illustrated by the story of the Trojan Horse. The city of Troy was destroyed because they naïvely welcomed their enemy inside.

Consider the example of Noémie and Abby. Noémie has a close-knit group of friends whom she deeply trusts. Abby, an acquaintance, has been trying to become part of this group. On the surface, Abby seems warm and genuine, but Noémie has overheard rumors that Abby has been speaking negatively about her behind her back. 

These rumors create doubt in Noémie’s mind, making her wary of Abby’s real intentions. The lesson from this proverb is clear: we must be cautious of those who seek entry into our inner circles. Betrayal often comes from those we mistakenly trust. By carefully guarding who we let in, we can protect ourselves from all kinds of evil deeds.
